Polène’s entire personality is quiet luxury, but make it attainable. It’s made for the girl who loves the idea of the Row, but also likes having money left over for dinner and a martini. Behind the bag - a family-founded French house, all products made in a singular Spanish atelier, with Italian full-grain calfskin and no garish logos - its understated folded sculptural shape is the logo.

Enter Mango’s high street contender which arrived looking suspiciously similar to its designer cousin. The overall aesthetic still gives expensive and serves the same quiet luxury energy without requiring the bank account. Suddenly, it had everyone questioning whether the splurge was necessary.
Both bags make a convincing case in their own ways, both have their cheerleaders. So naturally, it’s up to BIEN VU to investigate…
The Leather.
This is where the splurge slightly justifies itself. The Numéro Dix prides itself in being crafted from full-grain Italian calf leather, the kind that is soft to touch, is well structured and feels immediately expensive straight from the unboxing. On to the Mango dupe, the look is certainly there but the feel gives a different story. It’s made from a much less chic polyurethane which quite frankly, can’t and won’t compete with Polène’s leather quality.
The Hardware.
The details on the Numéro Dix are intentionally minimal - understated zips and polished rings are a subtle addition that don’t compete or overpower the design itself. Visually, Mango doesn’t quite meet the assignment. The hardware feels slightly more garish in its appearance, not quite exuding the coolness that the Numéro Dix does. Perhaps nobody is inspecting your zips over lunch, but hardware is one of those sneaky details that are a giveaway of who did their homework.
The Shape.
It’s hard to argue with this one, the instantly recognisable half-moon silhouette is where both bags really shine, but this is the category where Mango’s dupe earns its reputation. From a distance (and really close up, honestly) the resemblance is undeniable. Mango has managed to perfectly capture the visual formula which made the original so desirable and gives that effortless ‘Oh I just threw this on’ vibe.
The Photo Test.
On camera, across the table, from a distance, both bags are very much on par. Of course, there are subtle differences when you know where to look, but let's be real: most people aren’t conducting a forensic bag investigation over a coffee. From a quick glance, the two are going to give almost exactly the same first impression - and that’s where Mango’s dupe makes its strongest case.
Firstly and most importantly is that The Numéro Dix comes with the £450 price tag, but if it truly becomes your it bag, the one you find yourself reaching for on repeat and still sitting pretty seasons later, then the cost per wear starts to look a little less intimidating. Then there’s Mango, at a fraction of the price that’ll have your bank balance thanking you. Even if it only lasts for a season or two and the quality eventually lets it down, it still makes a very convincing case for achieving that Polène cool-girl aesthetic without the hefty financial commitment.
Verdict: The BIEN VU ruling? SPLIT. Mango is the best choice if you’re just here for the look, want to try the trend or simply don’t want to spend £450 on a bag. Polène is the one if you care for craftsmanship and are looking for a new wardrobe addition you’ll reach for for years to come. Ultimately, the best purchase isn’t always the most expensive one. It’s the one which makes sense for your wardrobe, lifestyle and bank account.
