Unless you have been living under a rock, you’ll have seen the trend sweeping our Instagram and TikTok feeds - the sheer lace duster dress. It’s become Summer’s unofficial third layer, worn open over wide leg jeans, tiny camisoles and paired with flip flops to bring the boho edge, it’s like we’re all gracing the city streets fresh off the Chloé runway. But is this a future wardrobe staple, or shall we expect to see a rise in lace duster dress sales on Vinted come Autumn?
Like every fashion trend, this one started on the runway before similar designs began quietly appearing in our high-street windows, and eventually infiltrating Instagram. Chloé, Stella McCartney and Isabel Marant returned to effortless boho dressing for SS26, opening the door for lace, ruffles and romance. But it wasn’t until the street style girls started donning the viral floor-length lace duster dress (thanks H&M and Revolve), styling it casually on top of oversized denim, that the trend really found its footing.
Now, it’s quite literally everywhere. Copenhagen Fashion Week, New York Street Style, Pinterest “Euro Summer” moodboards, and every other OOTD popping up on our algorithms. The formula rarely seems to change though, the sheer lace duster unbuttoned to a certain length, chucked on over a relaxed baggy jeans, 80s sunglasses, and a pop of colour with a fun beaded handbag. The finished product looks incredibly effortless, a boho city girl reimagined.
The trend in one sentence? A floor-length, lace number which blurs the line between lingerie and outerwear, and somehow makes sense.
It might be the case that the lace itself is the hero trend here, not the duster silhouette. A romantic ruffled layer thrown over baggy denim isn’t a ground-breaking new trend, it’s a go-to outfit formula the fashion girls have been relying on for years. The duster looks as though it might survive real life longevity because it feels modern and is easily thrown over a pair of everyday jeans and sandals. But, it’s the lace material doing the work here, adding movement and a little bit of theatre.
What doesn’t survive is treating the duster as the outfit. The minute the lace duster meets lace trousers, floral camisoles, vintage bloomers or anything else remotely bohemian, you’ve crossed into the realm of costume. The key is to allow the duster to do the job amongst the wider understated, cool-girl styling, which is really where the look proves itself.
Thanks to Pinterest, we predict the look might start feeling dated by Spring 2027 at the very latest. It’s had its time in the sun throughout late Summer this year, and we might fancy its reappearance for a month or two when the weather brightens again next March/April time, but will it fair any longer? Doubtful.
The more general lace-over-clothing trend itself has much better odds, not limited to the duster style. Worn over a sultry slip on holiday, layered over swimwear or thrown on with denim, it becomes less of a cult-following look, and more of a considered, timeless fashion choice which still says you have your finger on the pulse when it comes to the current trends. The duster itself might have a short lifespan, but a hard-working lace kimono or dramatic blouse will be something you can style in a multitude of ways, and likely never get rid of.
The Instagram girls will tell you to panic-buy the lace duster, the perfect not-too-baggy but not-too-tight jeans, the tiny clutch bag, the perfectly oval sunnies and some vintage jewellery for good measure - just to ensure you nail the trend. Suddenly, you’ve spent £400 to recreate an outfit formula almost entirely around a single item of clothing. The cost per wear on this isn’t even worth calculating, it’s a dramatic look which you’re unlikely to repeat on frequent occasions.
Instead, spend your money where the eye actually lands - on the statement lace. A good lace piece should work with what already exists in your wardrobe. If one single ‘trending’ garment requires you to buy five supporting actors to achieve the desired look, it isn’t a wardrobe staple.
Verdict: For You If… your wardrobe is already aplenty with suitable denim, simple tanks and accessories; and your lifestyle involves spontaneous wine bars, gallery openings and pretending you didn’t spend an hour perfecting an ‘effortless’ outfit.
Not For You If… buying the lace duster means also buying an entirely new aesthetic to make sense of it, wearing once and never revisiting again thanks to too many posed photos on Instagram.
